unexpected rant

Today we went to a picnic you-know-who's boss was having, and to our surprise it turned out really nice. We were afraid there weren't going to be many people there, and there weren't, but it wasn't too bad. Some of his boss's college friends were there with their kids. Hence THE RANT:

So when I was being asked the obligatory questions like what do you do? and how did you guys meet? i said "in school" and someone else said, oh you mean at carngie mellon! oh!

and then this lady said something like, "oh we've got some smart ones here" or something, i don't even know what she said. what i KNOW was the noise she made - it was like a groan.

at first this didn't get to me, but later on tim and i were talking about how rude it was and how unexpected it was. and now it has me enraged. because i'm used to getting lots of things when i say i went to cmu, but never the verbal equivalent of groaning and rolling the eyes!

Why does this make me angry? I'm used to someone implying that we were rich or stuck up or nerdy or sheletered or whatever else you might be if you went to cmu that might be bad. That can roll off my back because I know (at least I hope) that it's not true, at least not as true as it COULD be.

No instead, for I think the first time in my life, someone actually acted like being smart was a BAD THING.

I mean, maybe I'm just sheltered - maybe I was extremely lucky in high school. But I don't think so. People didn't necessarily like me, but nobody was like - OH GOD THE *SMART* GIRL IS HERE! DOWNER. Most of the time people were nice to me because (let's face it) I had skills that could be useful to them down the road (and often were). Plus I like to think I'm nice enough. Civil, polite even.

T & I were shocked. Because for once we'd been insulted for something we actually WERE and WANTED to be.

This was not helped by the fact that T was wearing a Simpsons shirt that read "I see dumb people." He put his arm over that part later.

ARGH. bitch.

NOW to add irony! Later this same woman had an argument with another woman about what the VERY best school in Pittsburgh was - whether it was Upper St. Clair or Mt. Lebanon (it depended on whether you tested kids in 5th or 8th grades for who was #1). OK, excuse me but GIVE ME A BREAK.

If you don't like smart people, what do you think they have at those schools? You think they magically change just any little kid into a 1600 SAT taker? But wouldn't that still make your kid one of the SMART ONES?!?!

i mean. COME. ON.

HAHAHAHAHAHAA! COME. ON. indeed! i think instead of T hiding his shirt he should have stood in front of the woman during the whole picnic. Just followed her around and stood directly in front of her and stared at her. hahahahahahahahahahahaha

the woman is obviously jealous. *says one of the sheltered "smart ones."* It was also probably her way of complimenting you, but because she is dumb, she didn't do a very good job of it. You know how those dumb people are sometimes, they get their emotions all mixed up. You should feel bad for her really. There is this poor woman in the world, talking shit about people, when she actually is trying to compliment them. She probably compliments people that she is disgusted with. What a hard life she leads.

hahaha now how's THAT for an egotistical smart ass rant? booyaa.

Yeah seriously, fuck covering up the shirt! I can't believe that someone would insult being SMART. Sometimes you just encounter closed-minded people, but after getting riled up about these things over and over again I've decided that if you let them upset you, THEY win. So don't give it another thought, cos it's not worth it =)

well, at least in the long run it had some entertainment value. ;)
